What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage provides a more accurate picture of body composition by distinguishing between fat mass and lean mass (muscles, bones, organs). According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), maintaining body fat within healthy ranges is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
The U.S. Navy Method
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center. The formula uses height, neck, waist, and hip measurements to estimate body fat percentage. For men: %BF = 86.010 Γ logββ(waist β neck) β 70.041 Γ logββ(height) + 36.76. For women: %BF = 163.205 Γ logββ(waist + hip β neck) β 97.684 Γ logββ(height) β 78.387. This method has been validated against hydrostatic weighing and DEXA scans with a standard error of approximately 3.5% for men and 2.7% for women.
Limitations & Considerations
While the Navy method is reliable for most adults, it has some limitations. It may be less accurate for very muscular individuals, elderly populations, or those with unusual body proportions. Factors like hydration level, time of day, and measurement technique can affect results. For the most accurate body composition analysis, consider clinical methods such as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing. Always consult a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or exercise routine based on body fat estimates.
